TRUCK DECKS - Hauling a Trailer

Q: I have a short box truck. With a 7' Marathon Deck, can I still haul a trailer?

A: Absolutely. You will need to be aware of your turning radius when hauling a trailer, but one of the most common deck setups is a 6'-6" short box truck (Ford F150, Chev/GMC 1500, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan) with a 7' Deck. Of all the regular shortbox trucks, a Dodge short box truck (6'-2") with a 7' deck will have the most overhang past the tailgate (13.5"). One way to increase your turning radius is to use a longer trailer hitch. If you have a super-short box (under 6') you can install a 6' Marathon Deck on your truck and still easily haul a trailer.

TRUCK DECKS - Installation

Q: How do I install my Marathon deck?

A: Marathon strongly recommends a bolt-thru installation method. Meaning that all four deck legs are bolted right through to the undercarriage of your truck box, one bolt per leg. We include four threaded UHMW backing plates with our install kit for this purpose.

NOTE: No matter what method of installation you use, to help distribute the weight of the deck more evenly, a wooden foot pad (approx. 8" x 16" x 3/4" plywood) under each deck leg is necessary.

Q: Do I have to drill holes into my truck bed to install a Marathon deck?

A: No, but we strongly recommend it. Many companies suggest using camper tie-downs or turn-buckles to attach a deck to the factory tie-down hooks in the corners of your truck box. This method has proven to be unacceptable as no truck manufacturer has published pull-out strength ratings for the individual hooks in their truck box. Most rate all four hooks as a system at 500 lbs. When carrying two ATVs or two snowmobiles there is a significant amount of weight in the box of your truck, far exceeding the 500 lbs rating of the truck manufacturer tie-down hooks. Marathon recommends bolting through your truck box instead, we supply threaded backing plates and bolts with every deck.

Q: Can I install my Marathon deck myself?

A: Many of our customers do. We include an install manual with all new decks. You can also download the PDF version. Just be sure you have four wooden foot pads (approx. 8"x16"x3/4" plywood) to install underneath each foot of the deck.

Q: Can I get Marathon or a Marathon Dealer to install my Marathon deck?

A: Our shop in Edmonton, Alberta will be able to install one of our decks in approximately 2 hours. For pricing information, refer to our Price Guide. Many of our dealers across Canada and the United States also offer installation services, inquire with your local dealer.

TRUCK DECKS - Deck Construction

Q: Will my Marathon deck rust or corrode?

A: Our decks are all constructed of aluminum for several reasons. It is strong, lighter weight than steel, and does not rust. It does oxidize, which results in a skin of aluminum oxide coating the metal. This coating actually protects it from further oxidation. (an aluminum can will take up to 10,000 years to disintegrate!)

Q: What are the features and measurements of a Marathon deck?

A: For both features and measurements, as well as links to photos and more info, refer to our Deck Product Page.

Q: Are the sides of a Marathon deck extendable?

A: Yes, both sides of Marathon decks extend. The total maximum width is 8'-6", which can accommodate two ATVs or snowmobiles while still being in complete compliance with DOT and Transport Canada regulations.

Q: I don't need extendable deck sides. Is there a deck model without them?

A: Marathon decks do all have extendable sides.

TRUCK DECKS - Conforming to the DOT

Q: Do I have to register or insure my Marathon deck?

A: One of the advantages of owning a deck is that there is no registration or insurance required, since they are considered 'deck accessories'.

Q: Is a Marathon deck legal in my area?

A: When a Marathon deck is in its fully extended position, it is 8'-6" wide (outside to outside). This is within the maximum width allowed by Transport Canada and/or the DOT. To ensure compliance, Marathon has provided clearance lights along the deck sides and a tri-light on the rear of our decks to indicate a load over 8' wide. Marathon recommends using 'working load limit' rated tie-downs to hold your cargo to the deck (in accordance with Standard 10, Cargo Securement).

DECK ACCESSORIES - Ramps

Q: What are the benefits of using Marathon ramps?

A: Our aluminum telescopic ramp is patented for good reason. All Marathon ramps are rated for 1,500 lbs. Our excusive locking 'fingers' on the ramp hooks of our Standard Deck keep the ramp securely attached to your deck if you are loading on uneven terrain - preventing ramp kickback that can cause bodily injury and damage to your vehicle and toys. Our telescopic ramps are equipped with Superglide for loading ATVs and snowmobiles. We also offer Skinny Ramps for ATV users, and 12' long ramps in both Fat and Skinny widths for a lower approach angle.

Q: What are the features and measurements of Marathon ramps?

A: For both features and measurements of all our ramps, as well as links to photos and more info, refer to our Ramp Product Page.

Q: Can I load ATVs and snowmobiles on a Marathon ramp?

A: Yes, our ramps are designed for ATVs, Side x Sides and snowmobiles - without having to flip the ramp over.

Q: Do I have to flip the ramp over if I want to load both ATVs and snowmobiles?

A: No, you will never need to flip the ramp to accommodate both ATVs and snowmobiles on any Marathon model built in mid-2007 onwards.

Q: I have sleds and ATVs. What ramp systems is right for me?

A: Our standard ramps included with every deck are 10'x52" Fat Ramps and have Superglide installed. For SidexSides, two 10'x20" Skinny Ramps can be substituted, or one can be added to the Fat Ramp.

Q: I have a large wheel base SidexSide. What ramp system is right for me?

A: For owners of SidexSides that are too wide for the standard Fat Ramp, you can simply add a 10'x22" Skinny Ramp to your existing standard Fat Ramp. Used along side each other, these two ramps will accommodate any size SidexSide. Alternately, you can also substitute two 10'x22" Skinny Ramps for the Fat Ramp at no cost.

Q: I only need to load ATVs on my deck. What ramp system is right for me?

A: When purchasing a Marathon deck, for no extra cost you can switch the default 10'x52" Fat Ramp for two 10'x22" Skinny Ramps that can be positioned according to the wheel base of the ATV you are loading.

Q: I want a longer ramp / lower ramp angle.

A: When purchasing a Marathon deck, for an additional cost you can upgrade to a 12'x52" Fat Ramp instead of the default 10'x52" Fat Ramp. We also carry 12'x22" Skinny Ramps. Note: a 12' ramp will not fit in a short box truck. For upgrade pricing information, refer to our Price Guide.

Q: Is the Superglide on my ramp good for loading both ATVs and snowmobiles?

A: Superglides offer superior grip for your ATVs and snowmobiles, and even your feet.

Q: How much do Marathon ramps cost?

A: We have several different ramps. For pricing information, refer to our Price Guide.

Q: Where can I find more information and photos?

A: See our Ramps Product Page and Truck Gallery.

DECK ACCESSORIES - Deck Extension

Q: What are the benefits of having a Deck Extension?

A: If you need to accommodate long toys but own a short box truck, an 8' deck will likely fit in your truck, but this creates anywhere from 1'-9" of overhang (on a 6'-6" box) to 2'-1" of overhang (on a 6'-2" box). This can be a potential problem when parking in your garage or in parking stalls. The solution is using a 6' or 7' deck along with a Deck Extension. A Deck Extension adds 18" of deck surface length to your deck when you need some extra length. The Deck Extension then easily flips up and onto the deck itself when you don't need it.

Q: How does a Deck Extension work?

A: The Deck Extension adds length to your Marathon deck only when you want it. The Deck extension is installed by bolting each of its arms into the deck sides. This allows the Deck Extension to pivot on those bolts in an arc movement and be positioned either flat out for loading or up onto the deck. For more information and a visual reference, refer to the Deck Extension Product Page.

Q: Do the Deck Extension sides extend like the deck does?

A: Yes. Our Deck Extensions are equipped with extendable sides that function exactly like the sides of our decks. When you extend your deck sides, the Deck Extension will also extend.

Q: How much length will a Deck Extension add?

A: It will provide an extra 18" of deck surface length. The overall length added including the bobtail is 22".

Q: Where do I attach my ramp if I have a Deck Extension?

A: The Deck Extension has a load bar at the end that is exactly like the one at the end of your Marathon deck. Simply hook your ramp onto the Deck Extension bobtail the same way.

Q: Can a Deck Extension be powder coated or polished to match my deck?

A: Absolutely. The Deck Extension sides can be treated in the same way as your deck sides and headache rack.

Q: Can I load when the Deck Extension is flipped up onto the deck?

A: The Deck Extension must be down in order to load anything onto the deck. However, you can quickly and easily un-install the Deck Extension if need be by simply removing two bolts.

Q: Can a Deck Extension be installed on any Marathon deck?

A: Any Marathon deck can all have a Deck Extension installed on them.

Q: Can Marathon or a Marathon Dealer install my Deck Extension?

A: Our shop in Edmonton, Alberta will be able to install your Deck Extension. Many of our dealers across Canada and the United States also offer installation services, inquire with your local dealer.

Q: Can I install my Marathon deck myself?

A: Yes, many of our customers do. We include an install manual with every Deck Extension. You can also download the PDF version.

Q: How easy is it to un-install a Deck Extension?

A: Many snowmobilers choose to un-install their Deck Extensions during summer months. Un-installation is as simple as removing two bolts.

Q: How much does a Deck Extension cost?

A: For pricing information, refer to our Price Guide.

Q: Where can I find more information and photos?

A: See our Deck Extension Product Page.

DECK ACCESSORIES - Powder Coating / Polishing

Q: What are the benefits of powder coating or polishing my deck?

A: Powder coating allows you to match or contrast your truck's paint, and polishing a deck gives it a smooth mirror-like shine.

Q: What colors of powder coating are available?

A: Matte Black, Gloss Black and Matte White are the standard color choices we offer.

Q: What parts of the deck get treated by the powder coating / polish?

A: The headache rack and the deck sides are treated. These are the two visible aluminum surfaces on your Marathon deck.

Q: Can I get the bobtail powder coated or polished?

A: We don't recommend it since your ramp hooks will quickly wear the treatment off.

Q: Will an older deck look good if I get it powder coated?

A: We have powder coated many older decks that are in relatively good condition with excellent results.

Q: Does Marathon do powder coating and polishing in-house?

A: No, we send the deck sides and headache rack out to a local company for powder coating and polishing.

Q: Can I have my deck powder coated or polished by someone in my local area?

A: Yes, several of our customers choose that route, especially if their deck is being shipped to them long distance.

Q: How much does powder coating / polishing cost?

A: For pricing information, refer to our Price Guide.

Q: Where can I find more information and photos?

A: See our Finishes Product Page and Deck Gallery.

DECK ACCESSORIES - Side Load Bar

Q: What are the benefits of using a Side Load Bar?

A: The major advantage of a Side Load Bar is never having to load or unload while driving in reverse. The Side Load Bar allows you to load sideways onto the deck using your existing ramp. When hauling a trailer, side loading ensures that your ATVs won't hang over the end of the deck.

Q: How does the Side Load Bar attach to my deck?

A: The Side Load Bar has a keyhole shaped notch running down the center of it. (The notch is lined with pads to help protect your deck from scratches). Simply slide the Bar onto the side of your deck to the desired position and hook on your ramp.

Q: Can a Side Load Bar become dislodged from the deck side?

A: The keyhole shape of the notch fits onto the top lip of the deck side, making it impossible for the Side Load Bar to accidentally come off of the deck side.

Q: Can I put the Side Load Bar on either side of my deck?

A: Yes. This also means that you only need one Side Load Bar for loading and unloading.

Q: How much does a Side Load Bar cost?

A: For pricing information, refer to our Price Guide.

Q: Where can I find more information and photos?

A: See our Side Load Bar Product Page.

DECK ACCESSORIES - UHMW Strips

Q: What are the benefits of having UHMW Strips?

A: UHMW Strips are installed in the ramp pocket underneath the deck. This is where the 10' and 12' telescopic ramps are stored. The Strips make it easier to slide ramps in and out of the pocket.

Q: How much do UHMW Strips cost?

A: For pricing information, refer to our Price Guide.

Q: Where can I find more information and photos?

A: See our UHMW Strip Product Page.

A surface of your choice can be mounted to the cargo bed frame- a UHMW board, plywood, even drawer systems.

Q: What sizes of Cargo Beds are available?

A: At Marathon, we carry both long box and short box Cargo Beds, but several other sizes are available.

DECK ACCESSORIES - Superclamps

Q: What are the benefits of using Superclamps?

A: We include two Superclamp II tie-downs with every Standard Deck deck because Superclamps are strong, fast and easy to install, and secure. Within seconds you can tie-down both the front and rear of your snowmobile without having to stand on the deck to do it. Superclamps are also lockable with your own padlock and adjust to fit all snowmobiles.

Q: What is the difference between Superclamp II and Superclamp Rear?

A: Superclamp II is meant to tie down your front skis, while Superclamp Rear ties down the rear skids.

Q: Can I use Superclamps on anything other than a snowmobile?

A: Superclamps are designed for snowmobiles only.

Q: How much do Superclamps cost?

DECK ACCESSORIES - Super-Glides

Q: What are the benefits of having Super-Glides?

A: Super-Glides offer superior traction for ATVs, snowmobiles, and your feet. They are used on Marathon's ramps, and can be installed on your Marathon deck in rows to correspond with your ATV/snowmobile's wheel base.

Q: How many rows of Super-Glide should I have installed on my deck?

A: Anywhere from two rows up to six rows. It all depends on how many ATVs/snowmobiles you usually haul and their wheel bases. Six rows allows for hauling one toy in the middle of the deck or two toys side by side.

Q: Is Superglide good for both ATVs and snowmobiles?

A: Most definitely. Superglides offer superior grip for your ATVs and snowmobiles, and even your feet.

Q: How much do Super-Glides cost?

A: An access hatch allows you to easily retrieve items that may roll forward in your truck box. It's also handy for accessing a gas tank installed in your truck box. If you require constant access to many items in your truck box, consider a Cargo Bed. Fort more information about Cargo Beds, see our Cargo Bed Product Page.

Q: Is an access hatch useful for accessing a gas tank installed in my truck bed?

A: Yes, the access hatch can be installed to accommodate an existing gas tank.

Q: Can Marathon make me a custom size access hatch?

A: Yes, contact our office for more information.

Q: What if I need constant access to large items in my truck bed?

ATV TRAILERS - Trailer Bodies

Q: What are ATV Trailers used for?

A: Hunters use our ATV Trailers for hauling their game or gear, recreational ATVers use them for hauling their supplies and equipment, farmers and land-owners haul debris, dirt, deadfall, landscape materials, ect.

Q: Is a plastic ATV Trailer lighter than an Aluminum one?

A: Only very slightly. For example, a 6' Aluminum Walking Beam ATV Trailer weighs 315 lbs, whereas a 6' Plastic Walking Beam ATV Trailer weighs only 5 lbs less at 310 lbs.

Q: What features are the same on both the plastic and aluminum bodies?

A: Both bodies have the same running gear and trailer hitch, which are removable. The also have nearly identical weights and similar dimensions and both are rated for 1,000 lbs. They are equipped with drain plugs, and can both be outfitted with an optional gas can rack.

Q: What features are different between the plastic and aluminum bodies?

A: The main areas of difference are tie-down points (plastic bodies have none, aluminum have four 'handle' tie down, two full length tie downs, and corner stake pockets) and customization (plastic bodies can only be outfitted with gas can racks, whereas aluminum bodies can have a hinged hydraulic lid installed, a boat/ladder rack, gas can rack and even a tilt feature accompanied by a dumping tailgate.

ATV TRAILERS - Axles

Q: What is the difference between a Walking Beam axle and a Single Axle?

A: Single axles have two tires, and are ideal for flat-surface areas only. Walking beam axles have four tires that move independently from the trailer body to compensate for 1' of terrain incline/decline. This means that your load will stay relatively straight over un-even terrain.
